some useful quotes from coaches/recruiters

Taylor, as a former D2 coach my advice is this.  Have them make a list of what area they might like to go to school, what major, any other factors that are important to them. Then make a list of all possible schools in that area. Look up schools and programs and from that research make a list of schools that they have interest in. Contact this coach directly and include video if you have it. It’s so easy to do this these days and recruiting companies are not needed. If the athlete is willing to go anywhere to be able to play then a recruiting service might be helpful. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

“I used to coach at a small NAIA school - I rarely used recruiting sites, but loved getting direct calls/emails from prospects. I would recommend figuring out where (geographical area) they want to go & just do a search for programs.”

“If a college puts much stock into stats, that’s not good. They (should) know that you can schedule yourself a cupcake schedule and pad stats.”

“Recruiting sites help you find schools. That’s nice. Google can too....which...At the end of the day, the player should be in charge of their own recruiting push. It’s their career, it’s their future. If they want to dawdle and drag their feet, that’s fine. It’s a lesson in life...they might not be wanted by the team they could be on”

What resources and assistance does your club provide its athletes who are interested in playing collegiately? Which of these resources do you think are helpful to them, and what do you wish your club provided that it currently doesn't?

“No offense to any recruiter company, don’t need them. All the info you need is on their websites. Advise the athlete/family to be realistic and search the teams who like your physical attributes. Take some simple video edit it for free on YouTube and email the coaches. Then call them

Have them register on University Athlete

Sorry I have proved it many times within my own club. The only rules you need to know is the communication rules which is also available. No need to give away a few grand that you can do for free. The only time you need a middle man is for communication until Junior year.”

What are the guidelines/dates for email/phone, in person, on campus, off campus, etc contact with coaches for each year/grade?

“NCAA can have face to face contact after June 15 preceding their Junior year of High school. However, they cannot have recruiting contact with an athlete during a tournament. As Alison said, NAIA can have contact at anytime.

DIII can talk to juniors at the end of the event day and after the player is released by the coach for the day.

DII (and I think DI as well) can also talk to a player after the event is done and the player is released by the coach.

Unless rules changed since last year, yes D1 can talk to players after the coach has released the team for the weekend

They can send those emails before that. The coaches simply can't respond with anything more personal than a camp invitation until that time. The restriction is on face to face contact off campus and on college coaches doing the contacting prior to June 15 preceding their junior year. Athletes are still encouraged to send emails to schools that they are interested in.

We just tell our players to include their coach and the club directors contact info. They can talk to them. As a college coach I’ve talked to coaches and directors of freshmen and sophs.”
